Leon Huntting is the founder and president of Conserve Open Space. He is a former Sausalito City Council member who during his tenure persuaded the Council to purchase the 14 acre Martin Luther King School site and preserve it for open space and recreation. He has served as treasurer of Open Space Sausalito since its founding in 2015 where he helped raise the funds necessary to purchase a two acre parcel of land that is now the Saucelito Creek Wildlife Refuge. Soon after the land purchase Leon led a successful effort to put a conservation easement on the property to protect it for wildlife in perpetuity.
Leon was also the founder of the Sausalito-Sakaide Sister City program, a member of the Marinship Specific Plan Steering Committee and Marin’s representative to the Executive Boards of the Association of Bay Area Governments and the Golden Gate Bridge Transportation District.
Leon has a been a resident of Sausalito for over 50 years because, he says, “This is, without a doubt, the best small town in America. What makes Sausalito great are first, the citizens because they put so much into paying-back for the privilege of living here and, second, the incredible beauty of the town and its appreciation of integrated wildlife.”
